CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A St. Thomas man arrested on rape charges in November 2018 was arrested on illegal gun charges over the weekend, authorities said.
Kewasi James, 29, of Estate Mariendahl, was arrested at 5:05 p.m. Saturday and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
“An unlicensed firearm was found in the vehicle driven by James during a traffic stop on Wilmoth Rhymer Highway,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said.
Derima said the VIPD’s Special Operations Bureau made the arrest of James on Saturday.
Based on the charges against him, James could also face federal firearms charges.
Bail for James was set at $25,000. Unable to post bail, James was remanded to the custody of the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections (BOC) pending an advice-of-rights hearing.
On November 8, 2018, James was arrested by the VIPD and charged with second-degree rape-domestic violence.
James was arrested after the woman positively identified him as the person who sexually assaulted her her in April 2017, according to police records.
