FHWA: 6 Bridges On St. Croix Are 'Structurally Deficient'

FREDERIKSTED — The Virgin Islands Department of Public Works (DPW) has implemented safety measures due to several damaged bridges on St. Croix.

Recent inspections conducted by the EFLHD (Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division) of Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) revealed that six of 28 bridges on St. Croix are structurally deficient.

Effective immediately, large vehicles over five tons are prohibited from crossing until repairs have been completed. Additionally, the following actions have been implemented to address the impacted bridges.

The bridges below have been reduced to single lane traffic.

The speed limit has been reduced to 20 mph while crossing on the bridges below.  Detour signs and warning devices will be posted.

Starting September 28, 2020, The Virgin Islands Police Department will be enforcing these safety measures.

DPW is urging motorists to comply with posted traffic signs and their directives.

The Department of Public Works appreciates the community’s patience as they work to improve the territory’s infrastructure.
