CHARLOTTE AMALIE — Residents of the Knolls at Contant got some much needed food thanks to the U.S. Department of Agriculture this weekend.
Food care boxes from the USDA’s “Farms to Families” program were handed out on Saturday morning, according to Annette Jennings Raimer.
Jennings Raimer said there are at least 40 elderly residents over the age of 90 living in Contant Knolls apartments and that the nutritious food would be delivered to them.
VIPD Commander Sandra Colbourne noticed that many of the people she was seeing in the community were food insecure and decided to do something about it.
Capt. Colbourne’s mission is to “find the elderly and feed them,” Jennings Raimer said.
Previously the Virgin Islands Police Department commander has distributed food to the Bovoni Housing Community as well.
One of the residents who benefitted from that food distribution effort was 105 years old, according to Jennings Raimer.
The USDA packed and shipped the food directly to the U.S. Virgin Islands.
At least one person in nine in the United States is food insecure.
