American Basketball Association Expands With ‘ABA Caribbean Initiative’

SAN JUAN — The American Basketball Association (ABA) announced that it has launched an initiative to expand the ABA into the Caribbean.

“Over the past few years, we have had so much interest from Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Dominican Republic, British Virgin Islands and other Caribbean countries to bring the ABA there,” stated ABA CEO Joe Newman . “And with the end of Covid-19 in sight, we feel that the timing is right. ABA Caribbean will be modeled after ABA Australia and ABA Mexico and will be the third piece in our international expansion program.”

“The ABA Caribbean initiative will be headed by Kevin Dailey, ABA Executive Director of Special Projects, one of several key initiatives being overseen by Kevin,” added Newman. “Kevin has put together a tremendous group of people from the various islands with experience in business, real estate, media and basketball.”

“I am very excited about this project,” stated Dailey. “Basketball is very popular throughout the Caribbean and we’re looking forward to ABA Caribbean teams coming to the US to play and our ABA teams going there also.

ABA Caribbean will debut as a Sweet 16 Tournament with a cash prize over the course of 3-4 weekends in August at the Kissimmee Civic Center in Kissimmee FL – with a similar tournament in 2022 in Puerto Rico or New York and in the British Virgin Islands in 2023.”
