FREDERIKSTED — The family of retired police sergeant Raymond T. Matthew, Sr. announces his passing on January 5, 2021 at his residence in Orlando, Florida. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by his wife of 43 years, Juanita, and his loving family.
Raymond T. Matthew, Sr. was affectionately known as “Paco,” “Ray,” and “Officer Friendly.” Following graduation from high school, he served a tour of duty in Vietnam with the U.S. Army and then commenced his 21 years of service with the Virgin Islands Police Department. Upon retirement in 1989, he continued to work with private businesses and service organizations.
Known as the original “Cake Boss” on St. Croix, his passion for baking and cake decorating was a love he shared with many, especially the students at the St. Croix Technical and Vocational Education Center. He led a wonderful life and contributed to the social and spiritual life of many youths in the community.
Raymond’s memories will be forever be etched in our hearts and his contributions to so many will always be remembered. We praise God for sharing him with us. May he rest in eternal peace.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents Travis E. Matthews and Lucille Christian Fuller, stepmother Emelda Matthew, his sister Eunice Chabral and daughter-in-law Valerie L. Matthew.
He is fondly remembered and survived by his devoted wife Juanita Santos Matthew; children Natalie and Raymond T. Matthew, Jr., Lester Emmanuel, Jr. and Dion Fredericks; sisters Bernice Williams, Kenyalita Duplessis, Arelita Palmer, Marla and Mavis Matthew; brothers Marvin Matthew and Anthony Fuller; uncle Samuel Christian (Lucy); aunts Rebecca Salazar and Ida Mae Christian; brothers-in-law Enrique Santos, Roberto Santos (Angela), Miguel Santos (Julia), Benito Santos (Elba); sisters-in-law Norma Gonzalez (Enrique), Anita Gonzalez, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins by the dozens and many dear friends to numerous to mention.
A celebration of life service will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant, Frederiksted on February 8, 2021 beginning at 9 a.m. Internment will be at the Kingshill Cemetery in the Veteran’s Section.
The family respectfully requests that attendees wear a face mask and adhere to the COVID-19 social distancing protocols.
