Robbery Suspect Who Fired On Attackers In Drive-By Shooting Arrested For Pre-Trial Release Violation: VIPD

CHARGED: Daniym Heywood, 24, of Ludvig Harrigan Court in Frederiksted on St. Croix.

FREDERIKSTED — A St. Croix man who opened fire on a car as it drove up upon him in a drive-by shooting attempt has been arrested for violating the terms of his pre-trial release, authorities said.

Daniym Heywood, 24. of Ludvig E. Harrigan Court, was arrested at 11:18 a.m. today and charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

Heywood was also charged by the Office of Probation for Contempt of Court for violating the terms of his pretrial release from a June 2020 arrest, according to the VIPD.

“Heywood was observed on surveillance video discharging a firearm at a vehicle, after the occupants of the vehicle opened fire on him and others on King Street, Frederiksted, on October 9,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said.

The shooting incident resulted in the death of 21-year-old Kadiyen Illidge, but Heywood was not charged with Illidge’s homicide, Derima said.

Heywood was also arrested in June 2020 for an alleged robbery that took place near Fisher and Strand Streets in Frederiksted on March 5.

At that time, he was charged with first-degree robbery, unauthorized possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, discharging a firearm, brandishing and exhibiting or using a deadly weapon and grand larceny.

Heywood surrendered himself to police today and was arrested based on outstanding warrants issued for his arrest, according to the VIPD.

Bail for Heywood was set at $100,000. He was not able to post bail, and was subsequently turned over to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections, pending his Advice of Rights hearing.

All individuals listed as arrested or charged with a crime in this report are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
