FREDERIKSTED — Police attempting to make contact with a suspect were fired upon as they tried to enter a room at the suspect’s house in Campo Rico early this morning, authorities said. No one was injured in the gunfire.
Charles Frazer, 26, of Campo Rico, was arrested at 7 a.m. today and charged with attempted murder, first-degree reckless endangerment, aiming & discharging a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, carrying a firearm openly or concealed, and possession of ammunition, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
“During the execution of the warrant, an occupant in the residence, later identified as Frazer, discharged one round through his bedroom door, striking an officer’s Ballistic Entry Shield,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said.
No one was hurt in the incident. The firearm used in the shooting was confiscated, and a search of the bedroom produced firearm magazines loaded with ammunition.
Officers of the Criminal Investigation and Special Operations Bureaus executed a search warrant of a residence in Estate Campo Rico, according to the VIPD.
Bail for Frazer was set at $100,000,. Unable to post bail, he was remanded to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections, pending an advice-of -rights hearing.
Sidney Elskoe, St. Croix District Chief of Police, expressed concern about the incident, and expressed relief that no one was injured. He also commended his officers’ restraint in the incident.
“Our officers displayed an amazing amount of control, choosing not to return fire after the suspect who fired on them,” Chief Eslkoe said.
