CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A St. John man who allegedly pointed a rifle at police and was shot once by one officer was arrested as soon as he stepped foot outside of a St. Thomas hospital today.
Alex Louis Camsel, 46, of Estate Pastory, St. John was arrested at 11:45 a.m. today and charged with two counts of third-degree assault, reckless endangerment and damage to vehicle, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
Camsel was released from the Schneider Regional Medical Center today after receiving treatment for a gunshot wound, according to the VIPD.
“Camsel was shot by officers after he pointed a firearm at officers on April 23,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said.
Camsel is accused of assaulting a female victim by hitting her with a rock on April 23, according to Derima.
The female victim of the rock throwing event in Pastory St. John required medical attention at the Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center for her injuries from the assault, police said.
Officers responding to the location of the assault observed Camsel in possession of a rifle,” the police spokesman said. “Camsel was shot by an officer when he pointed the rifle at officers.”
Bail for Camsel was set at $100,000. Unable to post bail, he was turned over to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections, pending his advice-of-rights hearing.
All individuals listed as arrested or charged with a crime in this report are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
