Toxic Gas Forces St. Croix Schools To Close Today; DPNR Investigating Origin Point

FREDERIKSTED — Early dismissals were announced for three St. Croix District schools today due to a gaseous odor affecting the air quality on the campuses, Education officials said.

Schools impacted included Eulalie R. Rivera K-8, Arthur A. Richards K-8, and the St. Croix Career and Technical Education Center, the Virgin Islands Department of Education said.

Students engaged in in-person learning at the schools reverted to virtual learning for the remainder of the day, according to the VIDE.

The matter is under investigation by the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR).

Later today, the Department of Education will provide an update on the status of the schools for in-person learning tomorrow.
