DPW Begins Cleanup From The Rains On The Melvin H. Evans Highway Today

FREDERIKSTED — Trash and overgrown vegetation has plagued Virgin Island’s streets and highways for decades. Thus, the Department of Public Works (DPW) has begun a transformative initiative to clear the roadways and beautify the territory starting this weekend on St. Croix.

“We have received a number of calls from our residents regarding the outrageous grass situation on St. Croix, which has been exacerbated by the recent heavy rains,” said DPW Commissioner Derek Gabriel. “We recently met with our roadside contractors to organize a massive campaign to address the issue.”

DPW will focus its crews on the Melvin Evans Highway today to begin tackling the grass and brush, particularly in the medians and shoulders.

While the roadsides are being cleared, DPW is asking motorists and pedestrians to proceed with caution and adhere to safety directives from the contractors. “I am asking our motorists to please be mindful as they are traversing the highway. While we are focusing on cleaning the island, we must be mindful of the safety of our contractors and motorists,” Gabriel said.

Following this weekend, DPW contractors will then travel throughout the various neighborhoods. This cleaning initiative will continue throughout the rest of the year.
