Man Who Violated Restraining Order Asking Mother For Food Charged With Contempt

KINGSHILL — Police are investigating after an “incoherent” man violated a protective order and was charged with contempt of court, authorities said.

Noel Matthias, of St. Croix, was arrested and charged with contempt constituting the crime of domestic violence, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

Officers were dispatched to a report of a woman requesting police assistance in Estate Glynn at 3:19 p.m. on November 15, according to the VIPD.

The unnamed victim told police that her son Matthias visited her at her home at 1:00 p.m. even though she has a restraining order against him forbidding him from coming within 1,000 feet of her, Superior Court records show.

“Ms. A.M. stated that Mr. Matthias came to her home and requested some food to eat,” according to the probable cause fact sheet. “Ms. A.M. stated that after giving the food to Mr. Matthias, he began to curse her, telling her that he is going to kill her.”

After making that threat, Matthias “sat down on her front porch and refused to leave,” the sworn VIPD affidavit says.

Matthias’ mother provided officers with a copy of the protective order which prohibits her son from having any contact with her, including at her home or place of employment, and must maintain a distance of 1,000 feet from her at all times, Superior Court records show.

The restraining order was granted by the Superior Court on February 24, 2022 and remains in effect for two years afterwards, according to the probable cause fact sheet.

Matthias was detained and taken to the Wilbur H. Francis Command for questioning, the sworn police affidavit says.

“Mr. Noel Matthias was speaking incoherently and was unable to provide the undersigned with a statement,” according to the probable cause fact sheet.

The suspect was booked and remanded to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections at the John A. Bell Adult Correctional Facility pending further court action.
