Mental Patient Shot Dead In Parking Lot of Sunny Isle Shopping Center On Saturday

SUNNY ISLE — Authorities are searching for the gunman or gunmen who shot a 20-year-old St. Croix man dead in the parking lot at Sunny Isle Shopping Center on Saturday night.

Andy L. Christian, of Estate Whim, was shot multiple times to the upper body and died at the crime scene near a Kmart store, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

Concerned citizens began calling 911 dispatchers at 9:42 p.m. to report multiple shots being fired in the Sunny Isle Shopping Center parking lot near the Kmart store, according to the VIPD.

Officers along with the Criminal Investigations Bureau Detectives arrived on the scene and discovered an unresponsive Black male in a vehicle who appeared to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body, VIPD Communications Director Glen Dratte said.

Emergency Medical Technicians on the scene were unable to detect any of the male’s vital signs, according to Dratte.

Christian succumbed to his injuries sustained from the gunshot wounds on the scene, police said.

Christian, known to suffer from mental illness, was subdued by four VIPD officers in November after he appeared naked before a neighbor’s window holding only a flashlight, court records show.

This incident is an active investigation. Anyone with information about this homicide is asked to please call the CIB Tip Line at 340-778-4850, 911 or Crime Stoppers USVI at 1-800-222-8477.
