Man charged with domestic violence after striking woman with sword

KINGSHILL A St. Croix man was charged with assault after striking a woman with a sword, authorities said.

Reynaldo “Naldo” Rivera Jr., 20, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault-domestic violence and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a crime of violence, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

The case began at 11:12 a.m. on Friday, when the victim appeared at the Ann Schrader Command Police Station in La Reine to file a report against Rivera for assaulting her and causing visible injuries, according to the VIPD.

The victim stated that she confronted Reynaldo Rivera Jr., about keeping the house clean and
an argument ensued, VIPD spokeswoman Kishma Chichester said.

“The victim further stated that Rivera pushed her against the wall and began assaulting her,” Chichester said. “Later, he retrieved his sword and started striking her about the body with the sheath of the sword causing visible injuries.”

Rivera was apprehended by officers and transported to the Ann Schrader Command Police Station by members of the School Security Bureau and the Criminal Investigation Bureau, police said.

Rivera was questioned briefly and placed under arrest, according to police. No bail was offered as per the territory’s domestic violence statutes.

The suspect was transferred to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections at the John Bell Adult Correctional Facility pending an advice of rights hearing.
