Police investigating killing at De Chabert basketball court

CHRISTIANSTED — Virgin Islands Police are investigating a fatal shooting that took place in Richmond late Friday morning.

The 911 Emergency Call Center got a ShotSpotter alert at 11:57 a.m. that seven rounds had been fired near the basketball court in Estate Richmond by the shuttered Ralph de Chabert housing complex, according to the VIPD.

Responding officers discovered a male victim who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his body, police said.

The unnamed victim was transported by ambulance and shortly after succumbed to his
injuries. according to police.

The identity of the homicide victim is being withheld pending notification of hiw next of kin, VIPD Media Relations Coordinator Kishma Chichester said.

“Preliminary investigation revealed the victim was driving by the basketball court in the area
of the former DeChabert housing community in Richmond and while he was stopping, the
suspect opened the vehicle door and discharged shots at the victim,” according to Chichester.

The death brings the total number of homicides reported in the territory so far this year to 42, including 22 on St. Thomas and 20 on St. Croix.

This case is under active investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau
