Man dies after shooting at coconut stand in Sunny Isle Shopping Center

CHRISTIANSTED — One man is dead after gunfire erupted this morning in an area of the Sunny Isle Shopping Center parking lot where ad hoc vendors sell fresh coconuts and coconut water,

Alex A. Burgos, 42, was positively identified by a family member as the homicide victim, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

A discharging of shots was reported in the southern area of the Sunny Isles Shopping Center parking lot at 9:40 a.m., according to the VIPD.

“As a result, an adult Hispanic male sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body and was transported via ambulance to the Juan F. Luis Hospital,” VIPD spokeswoman Kishma Chichester said. “The male subsequently succumbed as a result of his injuries.”

Burgos’ death marks the territory’s seventh homicide reported so far this year, including four on St. Croix and three on St. Thomas.

But there has been at least eight shooting deaths in the U.S. Virgin Islands in first 71 days of 2025, including an officer-involved killing at Lorraine Village Apartments in St. Croix on January 5.

This case remains under active investigation by the Major Crimes Unit.
