‘Winning Grandpop’ claims another big Powerball win. ‘Lightning can indeed strike twice’

BALTIMORE — A Maryland man dubbed the “Winning Grandpop” proved “that lightning can indeed strike twice” when he claimed another big prize, lottery officials said.

The man, who didn’t want to be named, won $150,000 playing Powerball, Maryland lottery officials said in a March 14 news release.

In 2023, the man claimed a $50,000 Powerball prize, lottery officials said.

“I was so happy to win,” he told lottery officials, per the release, adding that “I’ve always said I would win again — and I’m back!”

The man got the ticket at a gas station in Baltimore County, lottery officials said.

He matched four white balls and the Powerball, which typically would mean a $50,000 prize, according to lottery officials. However, “he added the Power Play option,” and the “multiplier for that drawing was x3,” which brought the win to $150,000.

The man, from Woodlawn, “has been playing the Lottery since its inception,” and especially likes jackpot games, lottery officials said.

He said he plans to save and help family with his winnings, according to lottery officials.

Woodlawn is about a 12-mile drive northwest from Baltimore.

Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.

Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
