ANN ARBOR, Michigan — While most high-major recruits spend months on the road visiting campuses, 6-foot-6 Florida wing Patrick “Ricky” Liburd committed to Michigan without ever setting foot in Ann Arbor. For Liburd, the decision wasn’t about a tour of the Big House—it was about a unique window of opportunity that opened just as he was reconsidering his future.
A Late-Bloomer’s Journey Unranked by many major services and initially committed to Coastal Carolina, Liburd was a “late developer” whose stock began to rise after a standout senior season at Sagemont Prep. Following a coaching change at his original destination, he reopened his recruitment and caught the eye of Dusty May’s staff, who were hunting for versatile “3-and-D” wings to round out the 2025 class.
The “Maize and Blue” Connection Michigan assistant Kyle Church led the charge, building a relationship with Liburd’s family over video calls that eventually beat out interest from Florida State. Liburd, a back-to-back state champion with a 49% three-point average, describes himself as an “energy guy”—the kind of player who dives on the floor and defends the opposition’s best player.
The “Michigan Effect” Despite never visiting the Midwest, Liburd saw Michigan as a “no-brainer” because of the school’s academic prestige and Dusty May’s history of player development. He recently socialized a video showing him being mobbed by younger fans for autographs—a phenomenon he calls “the Michigan effect.”
As he prepares to swap the Florida heat for the Ann Arbor winter next month, Liburd isn’t worried about the adjustment. He’s focused on the long-term goal: becoming the next underrated prospect to turn into a foundational piece of a top-10 program.
