Investigation Initiated by Parental Review
The criminal case against Formella was initiated on March 15, 2025, when a 15-year-old male student and his parents arrived at the Downers Grove Police Department to report inappropriate sexual contact. According to public statements from DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, the victim’s mother initially uncovered the illicit relationship while reviewing a text message thread on her minor son’s cellular phone.
Following initial interviews, Downers Grove patrol units conducted a targeted traffic stop on Formella on March 16, 2025, taking her into custody without incident.
Initial charging dockets focused on a December 2023 incident inside a Downers Grove South High School classroom, where prosecutors alleged Formella sexually assaulted the juvenile during an early morning tutoring session before normal school operating hours. Formella entered a formal plea of not guilty during her initial arraignment.
Forensic Disclosures Expand Charging Sheet
On April 17, 2025, the scope of the prosecution expanded dramatically after the victim underwent secondary forensic interviews at the DuPage County Children’s Advocacy Center. The subsequent investigation revealed that the inappropriate contact was not an isolated incident, but rather a long-term pattern of behavior that spanned nearly two years, operating from January 2023 through September 2024.
According to the State’s Attorney’s office, digital forensic extraction revealed that Formella sent the victim thousands of explicit, grooming text messages. Investigators also recovered digital journal entries stored in the Notes application of Formella’s phone, which documented the relationship and detailed her affection for the juvenile.
The expanded evidence alleges that Formella engaged in explicit sexual acts with the minor approximately 50 times. The dockets indicate that at least 45 of those encounters occurred directly on school grounds, with the remaining incidents occurring at Formella’s private residence.
On May 20, 2025, a DuPage County Grand Jury returned an upgraded true bill indicting Formella on 52 additional criminal counts. Her total operative charging sheet consists of:
⦿ 21 Counts of Criminal Sexual Assault (Class 1 Felonies)
⦿ 22 Counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse (Class 1 & 2 Felonies)
⦿ 6 Counts of Indecent Solicitation of a Child (Class 3 Felonies)
⦿ 6 Counts of Grooming (Class 4 Felonies)
License Revocation and Pretrial Release Conditions
Following her initial arrest, the Illinois State Board of Education moved rapidly to address her professional standing. On June 17, 2025, State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Sanders signed a formal executive order permanently revoking Formella’s Professional Educator License (PEL ID #2384901) after she executed a voluntary surrender of her teaching credentials.
During subsequent status hearings, DuPage County Circuit Judge Mia McPherson denied multiple petitions from the State’s Attorney’s Office seeking to detain Formella behind bars pending trial. Instead, Formella was released into electronic home confinement under strict pretrial monitoring conditions.
Her mandatory conditions of release include absolute exclusion from all Downers Grove South High School properties, strict continuous GPS tracking, house arrest mandates, and a comprehensive no-contact order barring her from any physical, electronic, or third-party interaction with the victim or any person under the age of 18.
Formella faces up to 60 years in a state correctional facility if convicted on the top-tier felony counts. In accordance with Illinois state privacy mandates, the identity of the juvenile victim remains protected across all public dockets.
