CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A Massachusetts woman is facing theft charges after being accused of stealing $20,000.00 from the telecommunications company she worked for in St. Thomas, authorities said.
Khadijah R. Smith, 30, of Boston, was arrested and charged with embezzlement by employee, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
The charge stems from an incident that was reported by Liberty V.I. to the VIPD;s Economic Crime Unit on February 27, 2025, according to police.
The investigation revealed that Khadijah Smith, a former employee, fraudulently credited over $20,000.00 to customer accounts, police said.
“Further inquiries determined that Smith admitted to issuing unauthorized credits to customers, including herself,” VIPD spokeswoman Sakeeda Freeman said.
On October 20, 2025, Smith voluntarily surrendered to detectives with the Economic Crime Unit,
where she was taken into official custody, booked and processed.
Her bail was set at $200,000.00. Unable to post bail, she was transferred to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections at the St. Thomas jail.
Smith was scheduled for an advice-of-rights hearing in Superior Court on St. Thomas Tuesday.
The Virgin Islands Police Department “continues its commitment to upholding the law and ensuring
accountability in all cases involving financial crimes,” according to Freeman.
