KINGSHILL — A former Home Depot employee has been arrested after she allegedly admitted to pocketing at least $5,000.00 from her cash register, authorities said.
Melina Figueroa was arrested and charged with embezzlement by employee, obtaining money by false pretense, grand larceny, and access to computer for fraudulent purposes, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
The charges stem from a complaint filed with the VIPD’s Economic Crime Unit by the Home Depot on September 20, 2025, according to police.
The investigation revealed that Figueroa, while employed as a cashier at the Home Depot in Barren Spot, “knowingly and fraudulently embezzled funds on several occasions,” police said.
“Surveillance footage captured Figueroa removing cash from her register and concealing it in her pocket,” VIPD spokeswoman Sakeeda Freeman said. “When questioned by store management, Figueroa admitted to the offenses, acknowledging that she had embezzled approximately $5,000.00.”
As a result of the investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Melina Figueroa, according to Freeman.
On October 23, 2025, at approximately 10:23 a.m., Figueroa surrendered herself to officers at the Wilbur H. Francis Command Police Station in Mars Hill.
The suspect was advised of her rights, served with her arrest warrant, booked and processed.
Bail for Figueroa was set at $35,000.00; however, she was permitted to post ten percent provision.
On Thursday, she posted $3,500.00 and was released on her own recognizance.
Figueroa was scheduled for an advice-of-rights hearing at the Superior Court in Estate Kingshill this morning.
