High Risk Continues Today β Risk Drops Over the Next Few Days
A High Risk of Rip Currents continues today across Atlantic-exposed beaches of northern Puerto Rico, Culebra, and St Croix.
Risk lowers to Moderate Friday and Low by Sunday, then rises again early next week.
Cooler night tonight
Northeasterly winds and limited cloud cover will allow cooler minimum temperatures, dipping into the low 60βs in the mountains and into the 70βs across urban and coastal areas, the National Weather Service said.
There is a moderate risk of rip currents from tonight into tomorrow across most coastal areas of the islands, according to the NWS.
HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING
* WHATβ¦Life-threatening rip currents.
* WHEREβ¦Beaches of Saint Croix, Culebra and the northern and eastern-facing beaches of Puerto Rico.
* WHENβ¦Through 6 PM AST this evening.
* IMPACTSβ¦Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water, where it becomes difficult to return to safety.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS
There is a high risk of rip currents. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins, jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags and signs.
If you become caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain calm, do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for help. If you have to swim out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.
