CHRISTIANSTED — Seven days after court documents revealed a chaotic landlord-tenant eviction battle in Estate Work & Rest that culminated in a wax melting pot attack, a TASER deployment, and death threats, the Virgin Islands Police Department finally broke its public silence late last night.
However, in typical VIPD Public Information Office fashion, the official release reads more like a sanitized corporate memo than an accurate accounting of the wild August 2 incident—leaving out nearly every key detail previously uncovered by the Virgin Islands Free Press.
What the VIPD Released vs. What Really Happened
In a brief late-night social media post, the VIPD officially confirmed the arrest of Jorge Ramos Jr., 20, charging him with Aggravated Assault and Battery.
According to the official VIPD press statement:
“At approximately 2:50 p.m., Ramos Jr. assaulted a police officer by throwing an object that struck the officer’s in left calf area. Bail was set in the amount at $1005.00, which was posted. Ramos Jr. was subsequently released into the custody of a relative pending his Advice of Rights Hearing.”
While the VIPD statement offers the absolute bare minimum, the Probable Cause Fact Sheet (PCFS) filed in Superior Court paints a dramatically different—and much more violent—picture of what transpired at 10 CB Estate Work & Rest.
The Discrepancy Breakdown
- The Weapon: VIPD claims Ramos Jr. merely “threw an object” striking an officer’s calf. Sworn court declarations from Officer Tianna Browne reveal the “object” was actually a heavy wax melting pot used to strike the officer from behind while police were trying to detain Ramos Jr.’s girlfriend, Kalyla Mounsey.
- The TASER & Confrontation: VIPD completely omitted the secondary assault and police force required to subdue him. Court records show that after striking Officer Browne, Ramos Jr. broke free from his father, charged Officer Careem Smith, and grabbed the officer’s shirt collar—forcing Officer Browne to deploy her department-issued TASER into his arm and chest to take him down.
- Medical Clearance: Emergency Medical Services (EMS) had to be dispatched to evaluate Ramos Jr. on scene after his father warned officers of a seizure history before he was medically cleared for booking.
- The Full Context: The VIPD post makes no mention of the underlying domestic feud where Mounsey allegedly threatened to stab and kill the landlady before striking her in the chest, nor the arrest of Mounsey herself.
- The Bail Discrepancy: VIPD lists bail as $1,005.00, whereas court booking records show $1,000 posted by his father.
