VIWMA: Possible Sewage Leak ‘Abated’ In F’sted; But Happened At King St. and King Cross St. In C’sted

FREDERIKSTED — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority said residents reported a “possible” sewer leak in the West End St. Croix town on Monday.

Wastewater crews were dispatched to Frederiksted town, but the situation was abated by the time the crews arrived at the scene.

“As of Wednesday morning, conditions at the location remain stable, with no sewage overflow,” VIWMA spokeswoman Melody Rames said.

Wastewater reported on Monday that a manhole in the vicinity of King Street and King Cross Street did overflow but it does not currently pose a “safety hazard,” according to Rames.

VIWMA said its crews will continue to monitor the situation on a daily basis.

“The VIWMA would like to thank the concerned citizen whom reported the leak,” Rames added. “The Authority encourages the public to take an active role in preserving paradise by reporting wastewater or solid waste related emergencies territory wide; including sewer spills, illegal dumping and service interruptions.”
