VIPD: St. Thomas’ Derrick Johnson Allegedly Stole Business Owner’s Laptop Computer

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A crime of opportunity led to a St. Thomas suspect being inconvenienced by an arrest.

Police said Derrick Johnson, 26,  was arrested on Wednesday and charged with grand larceny after he allegedly stole a laptop computer from a business.

According to the Virgin Islands Police Department, a business owner called the 911 Emergency Call Center at 4:11 p.m. on Wednesday and said that his laptop computer went missing.

The business owner said that he reviewed a surveillance video of his premises about the time the computer went missing and saw that Johnson had taken the laptop. 

Police said they met with Johnson on the premises of the business about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.  

“The suspect admitted to being in possession of said laptop and that he could return same,” VIPD spokesman Glen Dratte said.

Bail was set at $20,000 for Johnson. He was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending an advice-of-rights hearing.
