VIPA: Broken Ticket Spitter Means Travelers Must Go To Airport Three Hours Early

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — Airline passengers are being advised to arrive at least two and a half to three hours earlier for flights departing from the Cyril E. King International Airport on St. Thomas, according to the Virgin Islands Port Authority (VIPA).

“Entrance to the terminal may be delayed during the high-traffic hours of 1:30 p.m. through 3:30 p.m. due to a malfunctioning ticket spitter,” VIPA said on Facebook. “A parking lot attendant will be stationed at the terminal’s entrance daily during high traffic hours to manually distribute parking tickets.”

The sole vendor for parking lot equipment in the Caribbean is based in Puerto Rico, which also sustained significant damages from hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017.

“This has caused a shortage of parking lot equipment,” VIPA said. “The vendor has assured the Authority that the equipment will be shipped as soon as it is available. VIPA thanks the traveling public for their continued patience as we work to rebuild our facilities.”
