U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS HISTORY MONTH: Lindbergh Bay Hotel Was A Former U.S. Navy Hospital in St. Thomas

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — The Lindbergh Bay Hotel and Villas is a boutique hotel located within walking distance from the Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas.

It sits on a peninsula overlooking the picturesque Lindbergh Bay Beach. This quaint, family-managed Caribbean hotel serves as one of the amenities located near the airport.

The hotel has an interesting military history. The main building was built in 1928 and served as a U.S. naval hospital during World War II. It was converted into a hotel eight years later.

This historic property also has four canons as part of its landscape. Two canons bearing the date 1784 are placed at the lobby’s entrance. Historians believe they were involved in a skirmish between the British and French in the 18th century. Two smaller canons on the property that point across the bay were discovered in the Charlotte Amalie harbor about 50 years ago, but their “story” remain a mystery to this day.

John F. McCarthy is a veteran journalist in the Caribbean, writing from the "Decision Space" where survival meets the surreal. His reporting steel was tempered by a lineage of legendary editors and broadcasters, including Ed Wynn Brant (The Bomb), Owen Eschenroder (Ann Arbor News), Lynelle Emanuel (BVI Beacon), and Charles Thanas (WSVI-TV). Alongside longtime colleague Kenneth C. "Casey" Clark, McCarthy has navigated the front lines of the territory’s history—from the 1997 volcanic "snow" to every major hurricane since Hugo. Known for leaning out of doorless helicopters to capture the "money shot," McCarthy now edits the V.I. Free Press, providing the essential link between the island's colonial past and its SpaceX future.
