CHRISTIANSTED — A person of interest in a murder and other crimes is now in custody, authorities said.
Abijah Isaac, 19, of Sion Farm, was arrested on a warrant Tuesday and charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession or sale of ammunition, and possession of a controlled substance, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
Isaac is being held at Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility in Estate Golden Grove on a $75,000 bond, pending an advice-of-rights hearing, according to the VIPD.
On May 19, about 12:40 p.m., officers from the Ancilmo Marshall Command Station were on mobile patrol on Contentment Road near the Christiansted Bypass, when they saw “a gray four-door SUV overtake two vehicles in an unsafe area,” VIPD spokesman Glen Dratte said.
“A traffic stop was conducted on the gray SUV and contact was made the three occupants of the vehicle. One of the occupants was an unknown black male individual, who had exited the vehicle and took off running, at which time one of the officers pursued that individual and observed the unknown male individual drop a black object, which was later discovered to be a firearm,” Dratte said. “The unknown male individual managed to flee the scene and avoid detention. The other occupants were later placed under arrest for firearm and drug possession charges.”
On May 20, Criminal Investigation Bureau detectives conducted a follow up investigation and were able to secure an arrest warrant that was signed by a Superior Court Judge, for 19-year-old Abijah E. Isaac, who was the unknown male individual who dropped the firearm and fled the scene on May 19, according to police.
On Tuesday, police met with Isaac, who was served with the warrant for his arrest for Unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession or sale of ammunition and possession of a controlled of a controlled substance, Dratte said.
