Police Stake Out East End, Cane Bay For 2 Weeks And Net 3 Drunk Drivers: VIPD

CHRISTIANSTED — A police crackdown on drunk drivers traveling St. Croix’s East End and Cane Bay netted three arrests in the last two weeks, authorities said.

Officers of the VIPD have been conducting traffic checkpoints to find and arrest those driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages, controlled substances, and prescription medication since July 4, the Virgin Islands Police Department said. The traffic initiative has netted three DUI arrests so far.

According to the VIPD, here are the St. Croix men who have been arrested:

  • Zachary R. Zamorano, 43, of Teague Bay was arrested at 12:17 a.m. on July 4 and charged with driving under the influence of an intoxicating liquor.

“Officers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle driven by Zamorano during a DUI checkpoint on the East End Road, just west of Ziggy’s in Estate Solitude,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said. “Zamorano admitted to drinking alcohol and failed the field sobriety tests administered by officers. He was placed under arrest as a result.”

  • Mark D. McAllister, 54, of Estate Welcome was arrested at 12:30 a.m. on July 7 and charged with driving under the influence of an intoxicating liquor.

“Officers arrested McAllister in a DUI checkpoint on King Street, Christiansted, in the vicinity of Fort Christiansvern,” Derima said. “McAllister also admitted to having a few drinks and failed the administered field sobriety tests. McAllister’s blood alcohol content was over the legal limit, resulting in his arrest.”

  • James D. Killoran, 37, of Estate Canaan, was arrested at 11:35 p.m. on Friday and charged with driving under the influence of an intoxicating liquor.

“While conducting another DUI checkpoint at the same location on King Street, Christiansted, officers arrested Killoran after he failed the field sobriety tests and his blood alcohol content was over the legal limit,” he said.

Bail for Zamorano was set at $1,000. He posted bail and was released pending an advice-of-rights hearing.

Bail for McAllister and Killoran were also set at $1,000 each. Each man was unable to post bail and was remanded to the custody of the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections pending an advice-of-rights hearing.
