FREDERIKSTED — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority said that the Anguilla Landfill is closed temporarily due to a fire that began there last night and continues today.
A fire was first reported at the site at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, according to VIWMA.
Virgin Islands Fire Services (VIFS) and VIWMA contractors worked
to suppress the fire, however some hot spots remain active.
“Efforts are ongoing to finalize suppression activities,” VIWMA spokeswoman Melody Rames said.
VIWMA advises the public and all haulers that landfill operations have been suspended, according to Rames.
“Haulers are asked to hold municipal solid waste (MSW) until normal operating hours resume,” she said. “Green waste only will be accepted at the front section of the landfill. No other disposals will be allowed at this time.”
The Authority said it will continue to provide updates regarding changes that may affect public health, the environment and haulers using the landfill.
The VIWMA Preserving Paradise team said it “apologizes for the inconvenience and would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation.”
