Suspect In Murder Case Charged With Illegal Possession of Ammunition: VIPD
CANE BAY — VIPD police detectives obtained a search warrant for the vehicle of a person of interest in a murder case and got what they were looking for — illegal possession of ammunition for a firearm, authorities said.
Sharif Matthew, 23, of Betsy’s Jewel, was arrested at 7:32 a.m. today and charged with possession of ammunition, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
During the course of a current murder investigation, a vehicle owned by Matthew, who is a person of interest in the case, was seized by detectives on March 2, according to the VIPD.
Detectives obtained a warrant to search the vehicle and found ammunition. A check with the Firearms Bureau shows that Matthew is not licensed to possess a firearm or ammunition in the territory, VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said. Detectives subsequently obtained an arrest warrant and placed Matthew under arrest, according to Derima.
Bail for Matthew was set at $25,000. Unable to post bail, he was remanded to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections, pending an advice-of-rights hearing.
All individuals listed as arrested or charged with a crime in this report are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
