FREDERIKSTED — A St. Croix man who was reported missing on Monday was found dead in the water near a west end beach on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
Oswald A. Small, 85, was observed driving his vehicle on surveillance video that about 9:15 a.m. on May 24 near a residence in Estate Carlton, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
VIPD officers and members of the community conducted searches for Small with negative results.
“At approximately 5 p.m. on May 25, officers responded to the report of a body in the water at Carlton Beach,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said. “The body of a Black male was removed from the water and confirmed not to have signs of life. “
The male was identified by next of kin as being Oswald Small.
The cause of death is unknown at this time, pending an autopsy, police said
