Police Recover Body of Possible Drowning Victim Near Frenchtown Restaurant Tuesday

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — Police are investigating after a concerned citizen called 911 at 7:21 p.m. Tuesday to report seeing a body floating in the water in the area of Oceana Restaurant in Frenchtown, St. Thomas.

Officers from the Richard N. Callwood Command traveled to the area and confirmed that the body of a black male was floating in the water, according to the VIPD.

Police along with the assistance of St. Thomas Rescue, the Virgin Islands Port Authority and Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority personnel removed the body from the water, VIPD Communications Director Glen Dratte said.

The victim was positively identified by next of kin as 67-year-old Washington Williams, according to Dratte.

“Detectives, who were on scene, did not see any apparent signs of foul play,” he said.

The cause of death has not been determined pending the results of an autopsy.
