CHARLOTTE AMALIE — An elderly newspaper vendor was struck and killed by a taxi driver while selling papers in brisk traffic near a St. Thomas shopping center on Thanksgiving Day.
The 911 Emergency Call Center received a report from a concerned citizen about someone being struck by a vehicle on the Moravian Highway in the area of Nisky Center in St. Thomas about 1:38 p.m. Thursday, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that a taxi van was traveling westward on Moravian Highway in the right lane in the area of Nisky Center, when an elderly woman was crossing the road and was struck by the taxi van. She sustained life threatening injuries and expired at the hospital.
The woman was identified by next of kin as Pauline Sharry 73-years-old and sold newspapers in that area for a number of years.
Traffic Commander Captain Roslyn Jarvis and the VIPD extends condolences to the friends and family of Ms. Pauline Sharry.
This is an ongoing investigation by the VIPD Traffic Investigation Bureau.
