U.S. Virgin Islands Notches First Homicide of the Year In St. Thomas

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A shooting after midnight yesterday near Rothschild Francis “Market” Square claimed the life of a 59-year-old Dominican man, marking the territory’s first homicide of the year.

The unresponsive victim, who police said appeared to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds, was later identified as Marcos Antonio Benjamin Guerrero, a native of Santo Domingo, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

A citizen called 911 emergency dispatchers at 12:45 a.m. on Sunday to report “that a male had been shot in the area of Market Square, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands,” VIPD Communications Director Glen Dratte said.

Medical Technicians were also on the scene and attempted to render life-saving treatment, Dratte said Guerrero was transported to Schneider Regional Medical Center via ambulance, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
