Elderly Man Dies One Day After Crashing Into Fence And Tree In Clifton Hill, VIPD Says

KINGSHILL — A St. Croix man with a medical condition lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a fence and a tree near Clifton Hill on Monday afternoon, authorities said. He died the next day.

The Traffic Investigation Bureau was notified by 911 Emergency Call Center to travel to Estate Clifton Hill at 5:33 p.m., the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

The TIPB was told that a one vehicle automobile collision had occurred on the shoulder of the northbound lane near the Solar Panels there (Route 663), according to the VIPD.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the motionless man, later identified as 85-
years-old Kenneth A. Andrews, laying on the ground approximately 70 feet east of the
crash scene, police said.

A preliminary investigation guided by crash scene evidence determined that Andrews left
the Diageo area and was operating his vehicle from south to north through the Melvin Evans Highway intersection when a medical emergency occurred, VIPD spokeswoman Kishma Chichester said.

The evidence further indicates that Andrews, due to a critical medical emergency, lost control of his vehicle and collided into a fence and a tree located on the shoulder of the northbound lane at a residence in Estate Profit, according to Chichester.

Three men who were in the area at the time of the crash quickly responded and removed Andrews from his vehicle and placed him in an open grassy area so he may receive medical treatment, the police spokeswoman said.

“Thus far the investigating officer’s preliminary conclusion is that a medical condition was a contributing factor to Mr. Andrews losing control of his vehicle hence colliding into the fence and tree,” she said, “though there was no evidence to indicate that Mr. Andrews sustained any injuries as a result of the collision, he later passed away (today).”

This case remains open and under investigation by the Virgin Island Police Department
Traffic Investigation Bureau, St. Croix District.
