CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A woman who was on probation in Florida was arrested at the Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas for being a fugitive from justice.
Candy Wiseman was arrested Tuesday and charged with being a fugitive from justice, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
The case against Wiseman began on Tuesday evening, when U.S. Customs and Border Control agents reported a possible fugitive from justice had been detained at the airport, according to the VIPD.
Responding police officers were handed documents indicating that there was a warrant for the arrest of Wiseman, issued by the state of Florida, police said.
When contacted, the Martin County Sheriff’s office confirmed that the warrant was active, and that they were willing to extradite Wiseman, according to police.
Wiseman was allegedly serving a 5-year probation term for burglary, criminal mischief and child neglect when she traveled to the USVI without the permission of her probation officer, police said.
After her arrest, Wiseman was remanded into custody and appeared before Magistrate Simone VanHolten-Turnbull on Wednesday for an extradition hearing.
Because Wiseman did not waive extradition, the judge set bail at $75,000, and gave the state of Florida 30 days to issue a Governor’s Warrant for her removal and return to the U.S. mainland.
A review hearing has been scheduled for November 4.
