‘Mute’ St. Thomas woman accused of Mariendahl assault, burglary

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A St. Thomas woman who refused to even acknowledge her own name was arrested just the same on burglary and related charges as a “Jane Doe.”

Shaedaya Varlack, 27, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault, first-degree burglary, petit larceny, unlawful entry, simple assault, destruction of property, and disturbance of the peace, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

The case began on February 25, 2025, when the Criminal Investigation Bureau got a tip about a suspect in an assault that occurred in the Estate Mariendahl area, according to the VIPD.

Upon receiving this information from a concerned citizen, the Criminal Investigation Bureau traveled to the Annas Retreat area to conduct an inspection and met with Shaedaya Varlack, who was wanted as a “person of interest” in connection to the Mariendahl assault, police said

Varlack was taken into official custody and transported to the Alexander Farrelly Justice Complex for questioning by the Criminal Investigation Bureau, according to police.

Upon her arrival she was advised of her Miranda Rights and after refusing to identify herself or “sign any documentation, she was placed under arrest and booked as a Jane Doe,” VIPD spokeswoman Kishma Chichester said.

Bail for Varlack was set at $75,000.00. Unable to post bail, she was transferred to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections at the St. Thomas jail.

This case remains under active investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau.
