Man arrested in connection to gun-butting assault where loaded gun was put in victim’s mouth

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A St. Thomas man remains in jail today following a February 28 incident in which he gun-butted the victim’s head and put a loaded handgun in his mouth, authorities said.

Jeffrey Carty Jr., 28, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault, mayhem, disturbance of the peace and simple assault, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

The case began at 5:58 p.m. on March 3, when Carty was taken into custody and transported to the Alexander Callwood Command’s Criminal Investigation Bureau, according to the VIPD.

A Criminal Investigation Bureau investigation identified Carty as the suspect in an assault that occurred on
February 28, 2025, police said.

The male victim reported to police that, on February 28, 2025, at approximately 5:00 a.m., he exited his residence and walked to the street where his vehicle was parked, according to police.

“The victim continued to state that while at his vehicle, the suspect who he identified as Jeffrey Carty Jr.,
walked up to him, brandishing a dark gun and began to gun butt him in the face leaving a deep
laceration that required sutures and after assaulting him he placed the gun in the victim’s mouth,” VIPD spokeswoman Kishma Chichester said.
