CHARLOTTE AMALIE — The Virgin Islands Bureau of Motor Vehicles will resume issuing REAL ID driver’s licenses and REAL ID identification cards beginning on Thursday, April 24, 2025, BMV Director Barbara Jackosn-McIntosh said today.
“If you were issued a non-REAL ID, you will be re-issued a REAL ID and will be notified to come into the offices to pick up your REAL ID,” Director McIntosh said. “We apologize for any inconvenience that the delay in issuing REAL ID has caused.”
Director McIntosh added that if you currently have a REAL ID, that there is no reason to update the card, the current REAL ID is valid for travel and driving; this only affects persons whose ID or driver’s license has expired and needs to be renewed.
A REAL ID is a standardized driver’s license that requires states and territories to scrutinize and verify the information that is received from applicants. As a result, the process can take up to 30 days before a REAL ID is issued.
Driver’s licenses can be renewed three months before the expiration date, to avoid any delays in your travel plans. As a reminder, a passport, green card or other travel documents can be used to travel outside of the territory.
