Home Depot employee charged with theft attempts to fly off island

CHRISTIANSTED – A St. Croix Home Depot employee working at the Barren Spot store has been charged with multiple instances of retail theft, authorities said.

Daniel Ramos, 50, was arrested and charged with grand larceny, embezzlement by employee and conspiracy. the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

The charges stem from an Economic Crimes Unit investigation into Ramos’ activities that detectives began on January 17, 2025, according to the VIPD.

“The investigation revealed that on December 26, 2024 while Ramos was working, he knowingly took an air condition unit out of The Home Depot and placed it in a black Denali truck, and on January 28, 2025 he took a red Milwaukee blower and placed it in a dark color Infinity SUV, without him or the unknown individual purchasing the merchandise, causing The Home Depot a loss of $958.00,” VIPD spokeswoman Kishma Chichester said.

On April 9, 2025, Ramos was attempting to leave the island and was apprehended by U.S. Customs
and Boarder Patrol at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport, when he was detained, according to Chichester.

Ramos was transferred to the custody of VIPD Economic Crimes Unit detectives and he was served an arrest warrant, police said.

At that point, Ramos was taken into official custody without incident, according to police.

Ramos was transported to the Wilbur H. Francis Police Operation Building in Frederiksted, where he was booked and processed. Bail for Ramos was set at $35,000.00.

The suspect was allowed to post ten percent of his bail and was released pending his advice-of-rights hearing in Superior Court today.
