Unsuccessful senatorial candidate found dead at home on St. Croix

CHRISTIANSTED – The Virgin Islands Police Department is investigating the death of an adult male discovered in the Flamboyant area of Estate Mahogany on St. Croix.

On Sunday, December 14, 2025, at approximately 12:50 p.m., the 911 Emergency Call Center received a report of a non-responsive male at a residence in the area, according to the VIPD.

Officers from the Virgin Islands Police Department and Emergency Medical Technicians responded to the scene and confirmed that the male showed no signs of life, police said.

A preliminary investigation revealed no immediate signs of suspicious or foul play, according to police.

The cause of death remains undetermined at this time and is pending the findings of the Medical
Examiner, police said.

The deceased has been positively identified by family members as Michael J. Springer, age 50, according to police.

The investigation into Springer’s death remains ongoing.

Springer was well-liked in the St. Croix community and a successful businessman who owned an outdoor bar In Peter’s Rest.

Springer ran six times unsuccessfully for the Virgin Islands Legislature in the St. Croix district. He also ran one time for delegate to the Constitutional Convention on St. Croix.

Springer ran against seven opponents for delegate to the Constitutional Convention on St. Croix in the 2024 General Election.

He ran for senator against five opponents in the Democratic Primary on St. Croix in 2024.

Springer ran for senator against 12 opponents in the General Election on St. Croix in 2022.

He ran for senator against nine opponents in the General Election on St. Croix in 2020.

Springer ran for senator against 13 opponents in the General Election on St. Croix in 2018.

He ran for senator against 23 opponents in the General Election on St. Croix in 2012.

Springer ran for senator against 14 opponents in the General Election on St. Croix in 2010.

The Virgin Islands Police Department said it “extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved
ones of Mr. Springer during this difficult time.”
