Man sitting outside his apartment ‘feels’ bullets whizzing past his head: VIPD

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — The Virgin Islands Police Department is investigating a shots-fired incident that occurred on Saturday, January 4, 2026, in the area of Anna’s Retreat on St. Thomas.

According to incident reports, officers were dispatched to the area after receiving an alert from the
ShotSpotter system, the VIPD said.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with an adult male who stated that he was seated outside of his residence when he heard gunshots being fired, police said.

The unnamed male reported that he believed bullets passed above his head, prompting him to immediately drop to the ground and crawl inside his home for safety, according to police.

The individual further stated that he did not see who fired the shots and is unaware of anyone who would intend to cause harm to him or his family, police said.

Further investigation revealed several pock marks on the residential structure and numerous spent shell casings in the vicinity, according to police.

The scene was processed by the Forensic Identification Unit, and the matter has been forwarded to the Criminal Investigation Bureau for follow-up.

This case remains under active investigation by the Virgin Islands Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau.

The VIPD is asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has information related to this matter to come forward.
