CHRISTIANSTED — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) has issued an advisory following mechanical issues that have taken the LBJ Pump Station offline.
Overflowing: The malfunction is currently causing wastewater overflows in the immediate vicinity of the station and throughout parts of Christiansted. VIWMA personnel are onsite working to repair the facility and restore normal service.
Public Safety Advisory Residents, motorists, and pedestrians are urged to exercise extreme caution in the affected areas:
- Avoid Contact: Stay away from runoff in gutters, puddles, manholes, and drainage basins.
- Identify Hazards: Be alert for water that appears discolored or emits foul odors, as it may contain harmful contaminants or pollutants.
- Health Risks: Exposure to this runoff can be hazardous to human health.
The Authority expressed regret for the inconvenience and is asking for community cooperation while the matter is resolved. For further information, the Division of Education and Communications Management can be reached at 340-474-2811 or via email at communications@viwma.org.
