ST. CROIX — The U.S. Virgin Islands soccer community is in mourning following the tragic death of 17-year-old Elijah “Papo” Battiste, a standout midfielder for the U20 Dashing Eagles national team.

Battiste, who was attending Armwood High School in Florida, was killed in a harrowing multi-vehicle collision east of Tampa late Saturday night. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Battiste was driving his Volkswagen Passat on State Road 574 around 11:00 PM when an eastbound Nissan Versa veered into his lane, causing a near head-on collision.

The initial impact spun both vehicles into the roadway. Moments later, a Ford F-150 struck Battiste’s vehicle on the driver’s side. In a cowardly turn that has sparked outrage across the territory and the Florida mainland, the driver of the Ford F-150 fled the scene on foot and remains at large.

A Legacy of Passion and Pride

Affectionately known as “Papo,” Elijah was a rising star in the territory’s soccer program. The USVI Soccer Federation described him as a “bright spirit who brought passion and pride to the game.” His loss is being felt across the Caribbean, with the BVI Football Association and dozens of local leaders offering their condolences.

On social media, the community reaction has been swift and somber.

“Such a promising youth. Hope they find the driver. May he rest in eternal peace,” wrote one resident, echoing the sentiment of over 100 commenters who have rallied around the family.

The “Human Toll” of Hit-and-Run

The search for the unidentified driver of the Ford F-150 continues. While technological “disruptors” like Elon Musk envision a world of automated safety, the reality on the ground remains dictated by human choice—and in this case, the choice to flee.

The USVI Soccer Federation is asking the community to stand united and support the Battiste family as they navigate this devastating loss. A memorial fund has been established to assist with expenses.
