MID-ISLAND, ST. CROIX — Police said two dogs were shot on Midland Road in Estate Jealousy about 8 a.m. on Sunday.
The VIPD Animal Cruelty Unit is investigating a report that “a black older male operating a blue Dodge Ram older model truck” might have been responsible for the shooting, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
“A witness was traveling East on Midland Road and heard a single shot followed by a second shot,” VIPD spokesman Glen Dratte said. “The witness observed a blue truck stopped on the West bound lane and the two dogs around the truck bleeding.”
The suspect drove away and the witness transported the dogs to a veterinary clinic for medical attention, according to the VIPD.
“At the clinic, X-ray photos showed fragment lodged on the right side of the dog’s mouth and an entry wound on the left side of the face,” Dratte said.
The second dog sustained and entry wound on the right shoulder area, traveling across the chest and lodging on its left side after breaking a leg.
Each dog was is getting needed medical attention in a clinic and are in stable condition. The animals will undergo surgery to remove projectiles and fragments of projectiles.
At the time of the incident, each dog was wearing a collar which indicates that they have an owner.
