Restraining Order From Superior Court No Protection For Woman Attacked By Boyfriend

CHRISTIANSTED — A restraining order from the Superior Court offered no protection for a woman when her ex-boyfriend broke into her Golden Rock apartment and assaulted her on Monday morning.

Maurice Liburd, 46, was arrested at 10:49 a.m. Thursday and charged with second-degree burglary, an act of domestic violence, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau’s Domestic Violence Unit was dispatched at 9:40 p.m. Monday to Harbor View Apartments in connection to a reported domestic disturbance, according to the VIPD.

Officers met with the victim who stated that her ex-boyfriend Liburd came to her residence, gained entry without permission, and assaulted her, police said.

“The victim was in her bedroom when Mr. Liburd entered and wrestled with her to get her phone,” VIPD Communications Director Glen Dratte said. “He grabbed her by her hair and pulled her into the hallway pulling out some of her hair in the process.”

Liburd also destroyed items and threw items at the victim before leaving the residence, according to Dratte.

The unnamed victim has an active restraining order against Liburd that she obtained from the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands, according to police.

Liburd, age 46, surrendered himself to police without incident and was arrested late Thursday morning. He was booked, processed and transported to John A. Bell Adult Correctional Facility pending an advice-of-rights hearing.

No bail was set for Liburd in keeping with the territory’s domestic violence laws.
