CHARLOTTE AMALIE – A Mexican national was sentenced in federal court today for entering St. Thomas illegally.

Filiberto Moreno, 50, of Mexico, was given four months in prison for illegal reentry into the United States, U.S. Attorney Gretchen C.F. Shappert said.

U.S. District Court Judge Curtis Gomez also sentenced Moreno to one year of supervised release and ordered him to pay a $100 special assessment.

According to plea agreement, Moreno was stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Cyril E. King International Airport after he presented himself at primary inspection.

During the inspection process, Customs agents discovered that Moreno had been previously deported from the United States and that he did not have permission to legally be in the territory.

The case was investigated Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sigrid Tejo-Sprotte.
