CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A Dominican Republic native visited his female acquaintance twice in one morning on St. Thomas and broke a rum bottle to cut her when she didn’t agree to his demands, authorities said.

Eliandro Tolentino Martinez, 20, of Santo Domingo was arrested about 1 p.m. Sunday and charged with third-degree assault-domestic violence, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

The VIPD’s Domestic Violence Unit was notified by the 911 Emergency Call Center of an assault in progress in Estate Altona about 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

“She stated that at around 3:00 a.m., the same day Eliandro Martinez came to her residence and forced his way inside as she opened the door, stating that he wants to be with her,” VIPD spokesman Glen Dratte said. “She stated that a verbal altercation which turned physical ensued, and when the neighbor intervened Martinez took her phone and left.”

The woman told police that Tolentino Martinez returned to her residence a second time for the morning “and continued to verbally abuse her.”

During that encounter, Tolentino Martinez allegedly “retrieved a rum bottle, broke the bottle against a table and cut her with it on her right arm, according to the VIPD.

“The victim sustained several lacerations to her right forearm and hand which she refused medical treatment for,” Dratte said.

Police said Tolentino Martinez was advised of his constitutional rights and placed under arrest after the second incident.

“I am in full support of all efforts to reduce Domestic Violence in the territory,” VIPD Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations Celvin  Walwyn said. “There is no justification for domestic violence crimes.”

Martinez was booked, processed and turned over to the Bureau of Corrections pending an advice-of-rights hearing.

No bail was set as per Domestic Violence Law.

Tolentino Martinez said on Facebook that he works for a collectible shoes store called: “SObree Pasao D’ Moda’:$”

The name means roughly: “overstep of fashion” in English.
