VIWMA Tells Solid Waste Haulers In Territory To Secure Garbage Loads

CHRISTIANSTED — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) asked “all commercial solid waste haulers and residents to secure and cover solid waste, extending above vehicle’s side walls/hauling bed, before transporting to the appropriate solid waste disposal facility. “

“Covering and securing waste helps to protect human health, the environment and minimizes wind-blown waste that litter the landscape of the islands,” VIWMA said. “Litter is unsightly, and it reduces the islands natural beauty.”

VIWMA reminded all commercial haulers that “waste shall not be disposed of at public bin sites.”

“Solid waste is to be disposed of at the Anguilla and Susannaberg Transfer Stations or the Bovoni Landfill,” the authority said.

Persons found in violation of the territory’s litter laws are subject to a fine of $1,000 and/or 180 days in jail. Residents are also reminded to report incidents of illegal dumping by calling our 24-Hour Hotline at 844-WMA-USVI (844-962-8784).

The VIWMA Preserving Paradise Team continues to work diligently to provide reliable services and would like to thank the community for their support and cooperation. Let’s put solid waste in its proper place.
