South Carolina Man Dies In Sub Base After Tractor Accident Near New Victor’s Hideout

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A construction worker died Friday after an apparent accident in Sub Base on Friday, authorities said.

Hunter Blackwell, 23, of Greer, South Carolina was driving a telescoping forklift near Victor’s New Hideout about 10:53 a.m. when the machine apparently malfunctioned and fell off a steep embankment, the Virgin Islands Police Department and social media said.

Blackwell’s relatives have positively identified the body, VIPD spokesman Glen Dratte said.

Blackwell died on the scene following treatment by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), according to Dratte.

He had lived in St. Thomas and was working for construction company OTL Mechanical at the time of his death, the VIPD said.
